HCC Softball players

Clearwater, Fla. (February 1, 2020) – The Florida College System Activities Association (FCSAA) is hosting their annual Fastpitch All-Star and Sophomore Showcase games. The Hillsborough Community College (HCC) Lady Hawks team will have four athletes representing the North Conference: pitcher Landry Newgent, first basemen Morgan Mills, outfielder Cerynn Siemers and middle infielder Gabie Bello.

Landry Newgent
LH Pitcher
Oakland, FL

HCC Career Highlights

  • 13th in the nation for 188.2 innings pitched
  • Gave up 238 hits during her freshmen season leaving her 8th in the nation
  • 3.25 ERA Spring 2019 season

Landry Newgent is the starting pitch for HCC. Originally from Oakland, Florida, Landry came to HCC in the fall of 2018 after attending West Orange High School.

Landry is an impressive athlete not just on the field but in the classroom as well. One of her biggest accomplishments while at HCC is her 3.8 cumulative GPA, which is not easy when you play over 50 games in a season. Student athletes like Landry really have to challenge themselves and stay disciplined to find a balance when playing their sports and loading up their academic schedule.

Landry has some big goals set for herself for the 2020 season. She wants to do anything she can to help the team have a winning season and plays a vital role on the team as the silent leader.

Morgan Mills
First Base
Locust Grove, GA

HCC Career Highlights –Spring 2018

  • 132.1 innings pitched, gave up 194 hits and 51 strike outs
  • 142 at bats
  • 38 hits

Morgan Mills is a third-year sophomore playing first base for HCC. Morgan is from Locust Grove, Georgia and attended Tarpon Springs High School.

One of Morgan’s biggest obstacles while here at HCC is in 2018 she suffered a shoulder injury, leaving her to redshirt one year. However, this injury has set her up for a huge comeback. Her 2020 goals include going to states as a team and playing to the best of her abilities. If the opportunity presents itself, she is interested in continuing her softball career at the next level.

Morgan’s biggest influence has always been her dad. He has motivated her to best the best she can be, in softball and in life, which is why she really values what athletics has given to her. Being an athlete has taught Morgan many life lessons, like how to never give up and that no dream is ever too big.

Cerynn Siemers
Outfielder
Columbus, OH

HCC Career Highlights

  • .323 batting average spring 2019
  • 49 stolen bases
  • .375 on base percentage

HCC’s “Greased Lightning” Cerynn Siemers is our outfield captain. She played in 46 games her freshmen year with 144 plate appearances. Cerynn is originally from Columbus, Ohio.

Playing softball has had a big influence on Cerynn. Being an athlete has helped her learn more about herself, as well as taught her self-discipline, leadership skills and how to cherish every opportunity presented. One person that has influenced her the most is her high school softball coach from West Orange, Todd LaNeave. He pushed Cerynn to reach her goals of becoming a state champion while guiding her to become a wiser softball player and a supportive team player.

When Cerynn is not on the softball field or in the classroom, she liked to spend time with friends and family, especially her two younger siblings.

Gabie Bello
Middle Infielder
Tampa, FL

HCC Career Highlights

  • 133 at bats, 37 hits, 4 double, and 2 homeruns
  • .353 slugging percentage
  • 95 field assist
  • .824 fielding percentage

Gabie Bello is HCC’s starting middle infielder. Native to the Tampa Bay area, she graduated from Thomas Jefferson High School in 2018.

Gabie has been involved in softball/baseball for majority of her life. She got involved in softball when she was four years old because the game was a family bonding activity. “It is all I’ve known since I could remember,” Gabie explained. “Softball is my heart and I don’t believe I wouldn’t be the person I am today without this sport.”

Gabie has a protective, assuage characteristic about her that draws her teammates to her. She loves to be the person they can go to for advice, and her main role for the team this season is to be a positive influencer.

When Gabie gets some free time enjoys going to the beach with her family, watching her favorite movie Pursuit of Happiness or grubbing on some delicious seafood.
