Lady Hawks Climb to the Top

Hillsborough Community College went undefeated in the Pensacola State College Tournament winning all four matches. Their impressive stats had a huge impact amongst opposing schools resulting in a top 10 ranking on the NJCAA national rankings. 

On the first day of the tournament, HCC played two matches. HCC first swept Gadsden State Community College in three sets (25-13, 25-13, 25-15). Setter Mari Volponi e Giordan dished out 33 assists and added 4 kills, 2 aces and a block. Caroline Molossi-Benke had 21 digs and 2 service aces.

Player Volponi e Giordan said, “We found a rhythm at times today. I am Brazilian, so rhythm is everything to me. Even our martial artists move to a rhythm.”

In the second match against Snead State, the Hawks came out on top winning in three straight sets (25-22, 25-8, 25-19). Setter Zoe Konjer had the helm and dished out 32 assists.

On the second day of the tournament, HCC defeated Lee College and Costal Alabama-East without losing a set. Against Lee College, outside hitter, Isabel Martin, posted 10 kills and middle blocker, Nadine Burbrink, posted 5.5 blocks and 4 kills. Libero, Caroline Molossi-Benke, passed a 2.9 and outside hitter, Olivia Piazza, led all servers with 3 aces.

Maria Cordova-Garriga stated, “My coaches told me to bring the heat, so I went after every set like a pit-bull on a ham sandwich. I just tried to play on ‘level Maria,’ which is one level higher than 10.”

The Lady Hawks next play Daytona State College at 6 pm EST on Tuesday, September 10th.
