The Hawks Are Standing Strong

The Hillsborough Men's basketball team is holding strong in the NJCAA Region 8-Southern Conference leaderboard. The Hawks are more than half way through their regular season and are progressing their way to the state tournament. Overall, the Hawks are 8-9 in the season with eight games remaining for the before post-season action. Each conference gets two teams admitted to the NJCAA Region 8/ FSCAA State tournament and two teams have an opportunity with an at-large bid.

The Southern Conference games started at the beginning of this year. At the moment, HCC is 2-2 trailing behind #2 Florida Southwestern State College (15-2; 2-0) and #1 Indian River (17-2; 2-0). The Hawks previously lost to the #1 and #2 teams in the first game of the series but they didn't make it easy on them.

In the game against Indian River State on 1/5/22, the final score was 89-97. Although, the Hawks had a higher field goal and three-point percentage, the few extra points made at the free throw and three-point line spared the Pioneer from the loss. Captain, Japhet Prophet scored thirty-seven points (13 field goals, 3 three-points and 8 free throws). He had the hot hands on defense as well with three rebounds and five steals. In contribution to the scoreboard, freshman Geordan Rogers added twenty-two points and sophomore Trevor Chandler put up nineteen points. Though the Hawks fell short they put up a fight and have prepared for their next match up on 1/22/2022.

The Hawks game against Florida Southwestern was on the road at the Florida Southwestern State College Arena. During the first half of the game, the Hawks up put twenty-nine points but the Buccaneers had an early lead adding their own forty-three. Using half-time to reevaluate the game plan, the Hawks gained momentum in the second half with thirty-seven points, however, it was a little too late with the final score of 66-90. The Hawks still have two more opportunities to go against Florida Southwestern State College and Indian River State College as the other two teams in the conference, State College of Florida and Miami Dade.

The Hawks know what needs to be done to get their ticket to the FSCAA/ NJCAA Region 8 State Tournament.
