Lady Hawks Are Rolling Hot!
The Lady Hawks Volleyball Team entered the 2021 season with a 17th pre-season NJCAA National ranking. The Lady Hawks hit the ground running with a five-game winning streak to kick off the season.
Lady Hawks opened their game against Santa Fe State College and finished with a straight set win. HCC jumped out to an early lead taking the first set, 25-13, withstood some pushback in the second set to win 25-19, and finally closed out the match 25-13.
This first big win was enough to set the spark for the next four games.
- Hawks VS Pasco Hernando State College.3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-13)
- Hawks VS Indian River 3-1 (25-15, 13-25, 25-16,-25-15)
- Hawks V Eastern Florida State College 3-1 (25-18, 23-25, 25-23,-25-23)
- Hawks VS Pasco Hernando State College.3-0 (26-24, 25-17, 25-20)
The following match was going to be their biggest challenge of the season this far.
The Lady Hawks (#14) got off a 5-hour bus ride ready to battle with the Sharks (#2).
"Even with the highway miles, we showed some fight in the first and second sets," said Coach Larkin. "We got some valuable experience for players competing in only their 5th or 6th college match. We'll get better."
HCC dropped the first set 23-25 and the second 21-25. In set 3, MDC closed the match easily while HCC experimented with various lineups.
Svenja Rodenbusch and Pia Mohr had 9 kills apiece.
After a week of hard strategic practice, the Lady Hawks got their mind right and were more than ready to go against their next opponent. The Lady Hawks stood strong and fought their way to an important conference win against Polk State in 4 sets. Alice Munari had a career night with 28 kills and 20 digs. Ana Oro and Ellie Bullemer also added 33 and 32 digs respectively.
HCC came out strong, winning set 1 comfortably but faltered in the 2nd. The Eagles took the momentum into set 3 and seemed to have the Hawks with their backs against the wall, but Alice spurred the comeback with a few timely kills to take set 3 and then close out a feisty 4th set.
"We lacked a little passion at times, but boy did we find our heart at the right time," said Coach Larkin. "I'm very proud of their resilience. Today was a major step in our progression."
When asked about Alice's big night, Assistant Danielle Priest explained, "In our pre-match meeting, we were going over some scenarios, and I had a gut feeling on Alice. She certainly proved me right with a 20-20 night."
Setter (and birthday girl) Ellie dished out 52 assists to pace the HCC offense.
Lady Hawks are currently 6-1 overall and 4-1 in conference. They are averaging 12.8/3 kills per set, 2.6 blocks per set, 2.21 aces per set and 19.79 digs per set.
Let's keep growing these stats Hawks!
The next game is September 16, 2021 against Daytona State College.
